Rwanda: Nyamasheke, Mutovu Washing Station, Natural – Filter Roast
The Mutovu washing station is situated in Rwanda’s Western Province, within the Nyamasheke District, at an elevation of 1,800 meters - an area celebrated for its exceptional coffee-growing environment. Established in 2012 by a collective of 10 farmers, the Mutovu cooperative emerged from a shared ambition to oversee their own coffee processing and enhance the quality of their yields. Each member contributed between 1,500 and 5,000 coffee trees, collaborating not only to process their own crops but also those from nearby farms.
Now operating under the management of the Rwandan Trading Company (RTC), the Mutovu washing station consistently produces outstanding coffee. It handles both washed and natural processes. For natural processed coffee, the cherries are dried whole, resulting in a richer body and more pronounced, complex flavours.
RTC has played a vital role in supporting Mutovu's farmers by offering agronomy training and extension services aimed at improving their coffee production. Since taking over the wet mill, RTC has supplied farmers with seedlings to help rejuvenate their plantations and replace aging trees. In 2022, the company distributed 50,000 coffee seedlings, with another similar distribution planned for 2023—demonstrating RTC’s ongoing commitment to the sustainability and future of coffee farming in the region.
